Subject: Rotary Peace Fellowship - 2014 Recipient Great News and Updates

To all District 5040 Rotarians:

It's that time of year to begin thinking about, if you haven't already begun, looking for candidates who have a passion for more peace and understanding in our world and are eligible to expand their learning through Rotary's amazing Peace Fellowship Programs.

Here are some Great News and Updates regarding Rotary Peace Fellowship in our district:

Great News – We have one successful candidate in Will Plowright endorsed by the Rotary Club of Vancouver. Will is the recipient of the Professional Certificate Program and will begin his 3 month program in Summer of 2014.

Many thanks to the RC of Vancouver and your team in Mary, Stephanie and Aldo. Our thanks also go to the RC of Vancouver Quadra, Garry and team for supporting Roselynn's application.

 Updates from our past scholars

Julia Smith(endorsed by RC of Squamish- recipient of the Masters Program)

Julia wrote her PhD thesis and recently completed some research for the Center for Conflict Resolution in South Africa, which will be published in the International Peacekeeping Journal. The article is titled, 'A critique of the response by Global Health Initiatives to HIV/AIDS in Africa: Implications for Countries Emerging from Conflict'. She was offered a job instructing a political science course on the Politics of International Peacekeeping a Kwantlen Polytechnic University and started this September.

Bryan Nykon(endorsed by the RC of Burnaby Metrotown – recipient of the Masters Program)

Bryan is still working for the Vancouver Police Department, and also still teaching Conflict Resolution at Langara College. He continues to develop the ideas in his dissertation and doing follow-up with the various people who reached out after reading it in the Journal of Conflictology. While a PhD may be in the horizon, his current work and family life with daughter approaching 1year old is keeping him very busy at the moment.

Saad Karim(endorsed by the RC of North Vancouver – recipient of the Professional Certificate Program)

Saad is currently in town and after spending the last year working in Liberia soon after graduating from the certificate program. He is visiting with family and plan to do some writing in the next few months before going back in the field. As he has spent the past 10 years in the filed he will be writing on transitions and sociological, psychological aspects of aid workers when moving from "home" and then going to the "field" for extended periods of time. Schedule permitting he is open to speak at clubs. Let me know if you are interested and I will connect you with him.

 Other Update

There is Rotary Peace Centers Major Gifts Initiative Gifts Committee and our PDG Chris Offer is in that committee. If you know of anyone interested in donating directly for Peace Fellowships, contact PDG Chris. Thank you Chris for your continued work in this.

Here are some Peace related resources to inspire you:

 1. A great You Tube "Doing Good: Promoting Peace"  featuring an alumna of the Professional Certificate Peace Fellowship program in Thailand.

 2. A great " Building Peace" video on You Tube

Please identify a Peace Fellowship champion in your club and email me. This is a wonderful opportunity to further peace in our world and it does not cost your club any extra dollars, unless you wish to place an ad for interested applicants.
Thank you for doing your best to look for candidates to screen and apply for this amazing Rotary program---another reason to make The Rotary Foundation a charity to support.
Let me know how I can support your efforts.
